The History of our University

The university was erected following the legislation of the Bavarian Law for Universities of Applied Sciences from October, 27, 1970 on the 1st of August 1971. The university is a corporation under public law. The "Freistaat Bayern" is the bearer of the requirements. Areas of education: technology, business administration, social studies and design.

The inititative of focusing on technology was born in one of the oldest technical schools througout the continent, the "City Polytechical School" which was founded by Johannes Scharrer, Nuremberg´s mayor and patron of the German railroad system, in 1823.
When the school was nationalized in 1833, the physicist Georg Simon Ohm became member of the staff and was director of this institution from 1839 to 1849.
After first becoming the "Industrieschule" and "Königl. Bayrische Technikum" later the "Höhere Technische Staatslehranstalt" the school in 1933 was renamed in his honors "Ohm-Polytechnikum Nürnberg" commemorating its one hundredth anniversary.
After disbanding the City Building School in 1935 the Department for Structural Building was incorporated.

The educational field business evolved from the "Höhere Wirtschaftsfachschule" which had been erected in 1963.

The educational field social studies evolved from the "Höhere Fachschule für Sozialarbeit (since 1st of June, 1963)" and from the "Höhere Fachschule für Sozialpädagogik (since 1st of September 1968). Their predecessing institutions had been founded in 1925 and 1927.

Predeccsor of the educational field design was the so-called "open art room" and the "Höhere Fachschule für Grafik und Werbung der Stadt Nürnberg" founded in 1910.

On the 4th of August 1983 the Universtiy of Applied Sciences was granted the name "Georg-Simon-Ohm-Fachhochschule Nürnberg" by decree of the federal state parliament of Bavaria. Thus name tradition for the largest predecessing institution had been reinitiated and at the same time the most recognized physicist Ohm was honored, who had lectured at the oldest predecessing institution whose director he had also been during 1839 through 1849.

At present there are 8.400 stundents from 91 nations at the Georg-Simon-Ohm-University of Applied Sciences.
