Materials Engineering

Who we are and what we do

Around 360 students are currently enrolled in the degree program offered by the Department of Materials Engineering. Courses are taught by the faculty’s nine professors, as well as 16 professors and adjunct staff from other departments all providing comprehensive insights into the working environment.

Our campus has numerous state-of-the-art laboratories and workshops for research and lab work. In addition, we are involved in many cooperation projects with national and international industry that students can participate in.

What Materials Engineers do

Everything you use is composed of materials. Materials science and engineering involve making materials reliable and useful to mankind. This is accomplished through design, processing, and analysis of materials, after having controlled compositions, microstructures and properties. Aspects such as efficiency, quality and environmental compatibility play an essential role in this work, and the industry requires innovative and highly qualified people who play an active role in the development of materials for our future. Materials engineering is an interdisciplinary field, and materials engineers are in demand in all technical sectors, including:

  • Electronics and electrical engineering
  • Automotive engineering and energy technology
  • Mechanical engineering
  • Aviation and aerospace
  • Chemical and biomedical engineering
  • Environmental protection and raw materials industry
  • Plant engineering
  • Telecommunications

Degrees we offer

The practical focus of the degree programs OHM offers is particularly designed to meet these highly varied requirements. After completing program requirements, students are awarded the following degree:

Bachelor (B.Eng.) in Materials Engineering

During the scheduled time for degree completion, we provide students with a practical and comprehensive natural-science and technical education that includes a parallel co-op program in the fifth semester.
Numerous required electives allow students to focus on special areas of materials engineering as well as foreign languages, business administration, management and many other subjects. Our degree program thus prepares students in the best possible way for the challenges they will face in their subsequent careers and ensures professional flexibility. (Folder PDF, 551 KB)

After finishing their bachelor's degree, students may choose to enroll in our master's degree program to obtain an even higher level of expertise. The following graduate program is available:

Master (M.Eng.) in New Materials, Nano and Production Technology

Career Outlook

Developing cutting-edge materials is one of the key technologies internationally since materials are used in all areas of the manufacturing industry. The number of career opportunities for Materials Engineers is accordingly great, and the job outlook is very promising.
Materials Engineers are either self-employed or work for a company to develop new materials. They handle the planning processes and maintenance of manufacturing facilities and play an essential role in the quality control process.
Students are prepared for interesting tasks in the metal production and metal processing industries and in machine and vehicle manufacturing. Other job opportunities include the plastics, ceramics, building materials, glass, packaging, consumer goods, rubber and chemical fiber industries and construction. Products made from composite materials (as in the aircraft industry) are becoming increasingly important. Here Materials Engineers are involved in planning and implementing manufacturing processes and may provide consulting services in an executive position.
