Recognition of Courses Taken Abroad

Subjects to be Taken Abroad

During their "Semester Abroad", students must pass the equivalent of at least 12 weekly contact hours (equivalent to 21 credit points) in subjects called "Business Electives Abroad".  Therefore, at the partner university you have to choose courses within the following academic fields: economics, business-related subjects, social and political sciences.

Furthermore, students have to pass the equivalent of 4 weekly contact hours (equivalent to 4 credit points) in non-business related subjects called "General Electives Abroad".  Here, economics and business-related subjects will not be recognized as general electives, as well as sports and other purely leisure-related activities. However, you may study a third foreign language which must be different from your 1st and 2nd business language at the OHM.

----> Students who started their IB-studies before the winter semester 2010/11 will have to
earn an equivalent of 24 credit points in "Special Electives Abroad" and an equivalent
of 6 credit points in "Electives in General Sciences" according to their Study and Exam
        Regulation from January 9, 2006.

Recognition of Courses Taken at Partner University

Before you leave to our partner university make sure that the courses you intend to take will be recognized after your return.  If in doubt, please contact your academic coordinator at the OHM.

As soon as you have received your official exam results from our partner university, you need to apply for recognition of your courses through the IB-Examination Board.

As first step, please download the form "Recognition of Courses Taken Abroad" (German or English), fill in all sections and submit it with the required documents (transcripts, information about the courses' duration, syllabi, short descriptions of contents) to your academic coordinator. The coordinator, in a second step, will forward your documents to the IB-Examination Board.  The IB-Examination Board meets approximately every 4-6 weeks, and will decide if and how many credits you will receive for your courses taken abroad.  You will be informed about the decision.

For courses which, in the past, have already been recognized by the IB-Examination Board refer to this list. For the conversion of the grades refer to this table.

The recognition of subjects taken abroad strictly follows the following sequence:

  1. Out of all courses attended at the partner university, first, "Business Electives" with a total of 12 weekly hours (45 minutes) and "General Electives" with a total of 4 weekly hours (45 minutes) will be recognized. Hours of 60 minutes will be converted, accordingly.  Tutorials do not count.
  2. Only after having fulfilled the required 16 weekly hours, students may apply for recognition of additional courses, with the exception of courses that are part of modules 16+17 (Int. Financial Management, Int. Marketing, Int. Accounting, Case Studies in Int. Business).  These courses cannot be replaced by courses taken abroad.
For Students who started their IB-studies before the winter semester
             2010/11:
Recognition of additional courses may include subjects from the
             Advanced Modules (module 7).
  3. If students were confronted with an exceptionally high workload and, therefore, were not able to acquire the 12 + 4 weekly hours, they need to proof this by a letter from their lecturer or by an official course description referring to this extraordinarily high workload.
  4. Up to 6 credit points (for students before winter semester 2010/11: 8 credit points) can be made up for back at the OHM if students should have failed any course abroad or a course was not recognized.
  5. All courses which you succesfully passed at the partner university and were recognized by the IB-Examination Board for your "semester abroad" will be listed on your OHM grade report with the appropriate grade and ECTS points. However, these grades will not be included in the calculation of your grade average for the Bachelor's degree.

Recognition of Additional Subjects

Recognition of any additional subject is based on providing the IB-Examination Board with the following:

  • Completed special request form (German or English)
